1964 Ford Mustang
The big news in 1964 was the introduction of the Ford Mustang which got it’s first debut at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York on April 17, 1964. It combined it sporty looks, economy, and performance in a package that had an affordable price tag. The Mustang had enough options that you could have it as an economy car to a luxury sports car. It had an extended hood, shortened rear deck, sculptured body panels, and sporty bucket seats and was still able to be a family sized sedan that you could get groceries with.
The Mustang set records that have yet to be broken today. In 1964 Ford produced 97,705 Hardtop Coupes and 28,833 Convertibles. The base price for the Coupe started at $2368.00. Owners of the new Mustang’s reported on finding the Fountain of Youth in a sports car. Other owners exclaimed “Ford has made three cars, the Model T, the Model A and the Mustang” It was clear that people of all generations loved the new Ford Mustang. There was an unusually large range in reported gas mileage. Figures ranged from 8mpg in the city to a staggering 31mpg on long trips. Part of the varying results may be due to the large number of engine and transmission options available to the end consumer.

1965 Ford Mustang
In 1965 the Ford Mustang debuted as a simple sports car powered by a 170 cid six cylinder with a pair of V8’s as options. Originally named for the fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang and later the horse Mustang became the emblem. Buyers loved its low price, long hood, short trunk styling, and its many options and Ford loved its high volume sales. In mid 1964, Ford introduced the sporty 2+2 fastback body style to go along with the hardtop coupe and convertible. Enthusiasts also cheered the new “K-code” 271bhp 289 cid V8 that finally put some performance to match the Mustang’s good looks. For those that wanted more, the legendary Carroll Shelby and Ford collaborated to produce the Shelby GT-350. This was a fastback specially tuned by Shelby. The 289 V8 produced 306bhp in street tune and around 360bhp in special GT-350R race tune. These Shelby’s had no back seat, were only available in white and were fully race ready.

1966 Ford Mustang
Not much changed in 1966 for the Mustang, as it continued in production with much sales success and only minor restyling that included the emblem in the center of the grille. Now a “floating” mustang with no more horizontal or vertical dividing bars. Also new was trim on the rear fender that featured three chrome pieces that led into the simulated side scoop. This was also the first year for federally mandated safety and the new ’66 mustang was factory equipped with front and rear seat belts. Also standard was; padded instrument panel, emergency flashers, electric wipers and windshield washers, emergency flashers, buckets seats, sporty steering wheel, heater/defroster, carpeting, five dial instrument cluster, driver side mirror, back-up lamps, door courtesy lights, full wheel covers, rocker mouldings, and 3-speed manual transmission.

1967 Ford Mustang
The 1967 Ford Mustang was the first time since its beginning to be significantly changed. It was similar to it’s original style but just bigger. The grille feature a larger opening and the feature lines on the side led to larger simulated air scoops. The taillight were three vertical lenses on each side of a concave panel and the gas cap was located in the center of the panel. About seven percent of the 1967 mustangs had the four-speed manual transmission, 98 percent had bucket seats, 15 percent had vinyl tops, 16 percent had air conditioning, and a rare feature was the dual exhaust found on about 25,000 cars.

1968 Ford Mustang
The 1968 Ford Mustang used the same body style as the previous year with minor trim changes. The Mustang emblem was in the middle of the grille with no horizontal or vertical bars attached to the emblem. The air scoop on the side had a cleaner look to it due to the absence of the horizontal stripes.
The 428 Cobra Jet was offered in Fords Mustang fastbacks and coupes and in Torino and Mercury Cougar and Cyclone models. Hooked up with a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. All 1968 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jets had heavier-duty front shock towers. The mighty 1968 Ford 428 Cobra Jet was introduced on April 1, 1968. Rated at 335hp with actual hp around 410. Built with the 428 cid big-car engine, but produced with larger-valve heads and the race-brewed 427’s intake manifold. Also optioned with ram-air induction and a functional hood scoop that was mated to a special air cleaner with a vacuum-actuated butterfly valve that funnelled air directly into the 735-cfm Holley 4bbl carburettor.

1969 Ford Mustang
For 1969 Ford restyled and enlarged the Mustang. The Mustang had quad headlights for the first time with the outer ones mounted deep into the fenders and the inside ones mounted in the grille area. The side scoop was mounted higher on the rear fenders on the fastback models than the previous years and on the hardtop and convertible models it was in the same place but it now faced rearward. The Mustang had a high performance theme for 1969 with the release of the Mach 1 model. It came with a standard 351-cid V-8 standard but had the options of a 390-cid or the 428-cid Cobra Jet V-8 engines. With Trans-Am road racing being popular at this time, Ford released another model known as the Boss 302 Mustang and the Boss 429 Mustang.

1970 Ford Mustang
In 1970 Ford replaced the 428 Cobra Jet engines with the new 429 Cobra Jet engines. The 429 Cobra Jet was rated at 370 horse power while the Super Cobra Jet had 11.3:1 compression and was rated at 375 horse power. The Mustang was slightly redesigned but the most noticeable was the change back to single headlights. They were still in the grille opening and were the outside headlights used to be there was now simulated air intakes. The taillight panel was flat instead of the concave panel used in the previous years. For 1970 the Mustang also received the 351-cid Cleveland V-8 engine.

Could you buy a 1964 mustang with Bench seats in front and 3 speed on column in 1964
Ive never seen column shift mustang. Bench seats were a rare option.
